An index of Dundonians
who travelled far to make their home!

Dundee is the fourth largest city in Scotland and lies on the eastern central lowlands on the north bank of the Firth of Tay, around 100 road kilometres north of Edinburgh.

It is said that Dundee was built on the jute, jam and journalism industries. The City became known as ‘Juteopolis’ as thousands of people flooded into Dundee to find work in the industry. But other major and well known industries include: Whaling industry; Shipbuilding (Terra Nova); Keillers Confectioners (of marmalade fame); D.C. Thompson Publishers (The Beano & The Dandy); Realtime Works (Grand Theft Auto game); BrightSolid (online publishers).

Some famous Dundonians include: James Valentine (photographer & postcard producer); William Turnbull (artist); Mary Slessor (missionary); Williamina Fleming (astronomer); George Lawson (botanist); David Blair (mariner); and Fred Hartley (musician).

Its impossible to estimate how many Dundonians travelled far from their homeland, seeking a better life, quite often in a country on the other side of the world. I have put this index together purely as a finding aid for researchers to further their own research and assist in locating those elusive strays.

I welcome submissions from others for inclusion in this index - however, it should be noted that inclusion is based on strength of data, not simply message board postings. If you find this site useful - please tell others .... thanks for looking!
